Kdp

So I was talking to a local Diesel shop in my area (Reno, Nevada) about the KDP. He said if I have not had any issues with it by now ( 176,000 miles). Not to worry. I would have had problems with it well before I recieved it... And that it may have been fixed previously...

So I ask you guys. Should I be worried. I just picked up the truck last month. Runs great. Even better now that I have commenced the BOMBING...!!! Should I tear into it and take a look?

Dave

U best kill that bad boy

Dr Evil is right, ull sleep better knowing he can no longer cause catastrophic damage to your crankcase..... This is one of those can happen anytime, anywhere, anyplace, any condition issues, you are taking a risk everytime you bump that key to start your ram if it aint been done yet... Its not a difficult procedure... as a matter of fact here is a report with a TST kit as well just for your benefit...

Dave, I dont know where you went in Reno, but if you havent already done so, get down to the Cummins shop.
Speak with either Brian or Kat (Service dept) and tell them you want your KDP fixed.

They are an excellent group to work with and will treat you right.
Having work done by Cummins will cost you a little more than a private shop, but you will get quality and an excellent crew doing the work.

Call them at 331-4983.

Also, if you join the Rocky Mountain Power Boosters, you'll get the work done at a discounted rate.

Rich.

I personally know a guy whose pin came out at over 300,000.
Take care of it, very cheap insurance against what could be a major bill.

Absoluty worry. When it comes out, and it will, the cost is a lot more than a fix now. I've seen um where all you had to do to remove it was just take it out with your fingers. Others were half out, while others were all the way in. You just never know.

Fix it, now. Demand it.

I did call the Cummins shop in Reno today. Part is $1.09. I will do it this weekend. Can someone show me a picture of the timing cover?? Is it directly below the oil fill tube?? Looks like on my 94 all I have to do is remove fan shroud, fan, oil tube fill neck and than remove timing cover? Do I have this right????

Thanks guys...... Dave.....

I have met and told at least a half dozen guys with our 12 valves that did not know anything about the KDP. Their response were all the same. I have over 200,000 (pick a number) miles on her I guess if it was gunna go it would have. Also another response....."I have gotten more than my monies worth out of this truck, if it goes oh well" I just dont understand that logic? When I found out about KDPs I fixed mine ASAP, like within a week. Everytime I started it I was thinking this could be the last time.

WCI................the timing cover is the entire cover on the front of the engine where the oil is put in. The fan, pulley, just everything that will stop the cover from coming off will have to be removed. The fan shroud is OK. The fan will pass by. Once the cover is off, the pin is right above the cam gear. While you're in there check all bolts you can get to. The pin needs to be left in also. When you remove the sensor from the crank, be sure it goes back on the same way. That will cause trouble.

Dave: The best place to buy this is:

http://www.tstproducts.com/index.asp...PROD&ProdID=64

The kit includes the tab, the crankshaft seal and gasket material. Comes with instructions also I am told. You can also do a search on the site for instructions on the KDP fix. I did mine by the drill and tap method.

Whatever you do, git-r-done now or you could be faced with this:

Ok, I went to the Cummin's shop and picked up the KDP kit. $53.00 for cranks seal, cover seal, new bolt, tab and instructions.....

So with my 94 I need to:

take fan, fan belt and fan pulley off
take dampener off
take timing cover bolts off

install tab
check all rear timing cover bolts for 18 foot lbs torque
install new crank seal

bolt everything back up.......

Then install my new 4" stainless steel exhaust with Magnaflow muffler and race all imports in my hood........
