K & N took a poop......
'Morning, Guys...I have a K & N filter on my 97 Dodge diesel, and noticed that the covering was getting bald. Upon further inspection, I saw where strands of the filter were stuck in my turbo, and the veins of the turbo had chunks missing. I took the truck to a performance shop, and got an estimate for 2100bucks to repair. The mechanic was not surprised, and said that this is fairly common.
Anyone else have this problem?
What is the best filter setup?
Anyone have a cold air setup for sale?

The guy wanted 2100 + bucks to replace the turbo and filter. Also said it needed a process where they pumped something through the system that cleaned the injectors.

uhh, I hope you're not considering giving that person any money! so you're saying they pour some fuel additive in the tank?
run fast and far. if you're in need of a good stock turbo to get you back on the road (though yours will probably work for a good while) I've got one laying around

Used turbo is around $300, and say 4 hours time, I'd say a price of $700 max for that. For $2100 you could have a Silver Bullet and still have money left over.

The turbo had a little end play, but what was nasty was how the vain was chewed up. The truck ran fantastic. Almost as good as it did two years ago.

Which is why I stuck my stock air box and filter back in. That and aftermarkets don't catch all the dust like they claim they do. I'd call K&N and see what happens.

Well...****! If this a common occurrence, why hasn't there been any info about this on this website? Here I invest money in a piece of crap that's costing me a bunch of money, and maybe has destroyed my motor, and right down below this thread is an advertisement for K & N filters. Doesn't Diesel Truck Resource give a rat's *** how they make their money?
And do you think K & N is going to admit that their product caused the damage?

Well, there are a lot of people that run them with no problems... yet a lot of people do not. The biggest problem with K&N is that they let too much crap through, not that they come apart.
I think that you might have a case if you have K&N filter material in your turbo...
And, To answer your question, DTR does care about how we make our money, there are a few advertisers that have been banned because of bad products or poor business practices.
This is the first time I have heard of a K&N failing. Crap happens some times.

I had a K$N rupture on my truck. Those things are junk. I went ot a BHAF. No more problems.
That shop is taking you for a ride. I had a shop do the same thing to me. I went there to get a seal to do my KDP. The guy kept telling me the repair to stop the oil leak was going to run me 2500.00 I kept telling him there is no oil leak and that I was doing this a preventative mainenance. He kept going on about how the head had to come off and the pushrods would fall down in he oil pan. He couldn't seem to wrap his brain around the fact that I knew what I was doing and just needed the seal. I used to just stop by there to get stanadyne there. Now he doesn't even get that business. I wonder how many suckers he hooked with that line.

First off Id not go back to the guy charging you $2100. Thats a pure ripoff. You can get a great turbo and have it installed for much less than that.
Secondly you may find that a lot of the K&N junk and turbo chunks got held up in the intercooler. Its worth investigating.
