The nut holding 5th gear on has come loose. You may not even need a rebuild. I suggest a little bit of searching as this has been covered many, many times.

I got a NV4500 from a 2002, its getting ready to go in my truck, i was told it has the updated nut on it? I see no set screws on the nut, should i just tack weld it to the shaft?

Is there some way to tell if you have a splined shaft ? I thought that it was the fix for this problem.

I've been through this 3 times. The dodge nut fix is crap. Best fix is a heliarc weld all the way around the nut. Can be done in the truck. Only need to pull off the tail shaft housing, drive shaft , etc.. The tail shafts are an aloy steel. Best to weld them with 308 stainless wire with TIG. An afternoon fix.
