Intercooler line came off
Intercooler line came off
My friend has a 98 12 valve and while driving down to go fishing, his intercooler line came off his turbo going to the intercooler. He lost a whole bunch of power. When we stopped he had oil all over the motor. We put it back on, tightened it up and it doesnt leak anymore. Did this hurt anything? Where did the oil come from?
Re:Intercooler line came off
We put it back on and it runs better than ever. We were thinking that it was hot because the turbo was doing nothing. Do you think he still is shooting oil? He ran it at least 40 miles with it off. There was oil everywhere under the hood. Now that the line is back on, there is no oil leaking anywhere.
Re:Intercooler line came off
If the oil was coming from the charge air line then the turbo needs to be rebuilt. When you blow a boot you overspool the turbo. Oil coming out of the discharge side of the turbo is NOT good and is possibly dangerous. Check the end play and side to side play on the turbo.

Would oil flow more if it was hot? He was working the truck when the line came off. Will the turbo get messed up if the charge line is off because of the heat?
Re:Intercooler line came off
I dont know if oil came out of the outlet? All I know is that the line came off and oil was everywhere. We figured that since the line was off that oil came out of the hose.
Re:Intercooler line came off
Would this cause any change in the sound of the turbo? Not at speed only at idle? My truck has picked up a strage sound that I am having trouble locating. I too recently had an intercooler line problem and wonder if it is related to the noise.
Re:Intercooler line came off
Pull the hose off clean the impeller and run a few miles if there is any sign of oil STOP and replace or rebuild the turbo. If no sign of oil run about 50 mi and check again. You most likely belw out the seal and the leaking won't stop and could cause a blow up of the turbo and the cleanup of the intercooler is at least $300-$500 if you remove it and reinstall it. Don't take a chance you could get parts in the engine and that is big $$$$.
