Input shaft NV4500
Input shaft NV4500
If you change out your input shaft do you just pull the retainer and install the new shaft and bearings or do you have to redo the shims. I have done a search on this and its pros and cons. I don't know yet that I will have to but want to find out for sure.
If you have (or can get) a dial indicator to check shaft play then you should re-shim them. It's been a while but I think you have to pull the o/d gear housing along with 5th gear, then there are two plates that hold the bearing races and shims, one on the main shaft and counter shaft. I think the goal is .008 - .012" play. I would at least make sure you are within specs before you put it back together.
