Starting Problems-Rare, but sometimes Floods?
well this happen about 4 or 5 times in the last one month..seems like when it sits overnight, when I go to start it, it turns over and over without starting. I have to hold the peddle to the floor before it starts..when it starts, it will run like its flooded and smokes for about 10 sec. then it runs fine..it only does this once in a while..No other probles, no evidence of water in the oil-water ..I sure dont want this to get worse..No mod's, 228,000 miles on it, auto..any ideas? glow plugs? I do use som "drews brew"..2 cycle mix/p.s..thanks in advance!!

Now, it isn't flooded!!
It is air in the fuel system. Some of the 12 valves develope a leak in the return line at the rear of the head. It doesn't leak fuel at first but it is going to soon. Drivers side at the rear of the head.
The reason it sputters is it is blowing the air out the lines.
Your truck does NOT have glow plugs!! It has a grid heater that only works below 59 degrees.
Now, what I did with my 95 dodge when it did this very thing, was to loosen the clamp and slide the hose on about an inch farther. This fixed it. The metal line is a welded tube. The vibration cracked the tube/line. Get the hose on it far enough was all mine wanted.
The reason it is sputtering is because he is holding the pedal to the floor. Thats delivering all the fuel that pump can on start up, more than when its at WOT at 2k rpm. A LITTLE throttle is all you need when you are trying to start it when its tough to start.
Test for leak down from leaking fuel lines.
Before you start it next time it sits, pump the primer about 20 cycles before you start. If it starts right up, you have a leak in the return/fuel lines.
