idle will not adjust

After installing the 3K GSK and replacing the #5 with a #10 plate, my idle jumped up by approximately 150-200 RPM. I have tried adjusting it down with no luck.

I am using the 6mm bolt with the jam nut on the bottom to adjust the idle???
I can get it to either not idle if I adjust it too far but otherwise the idle will not drop below 750-800 RPM.

Any information would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks, Don

Your gov spring retainers might be a click or two too tight. Your idle should be 750-800 in neutral with the A/C on. It'll start better if you set it there.

BTW, the idle stop bolt gets a groove worn in the top that can make adjusting the idle a bit touchy.

Hmm

i think the actual size is a 10 mm bolt with a 10 mm locknut at the bottom. If your idle will not come down anymore, then your springs are too tight, They should be at .55-.60 of an inch to fire up just fine. I would back them off a click or two at best. But why would u want it to idle at less than 750-800 rpms? As i recall, 800 is cummins spec for what these trucks should idle at ..

I did set them two clicks tighter when they were installed. They were both at .025" Now they are at .045" I thought the idle was supposed to be lower on the manual shift? But I did not read the engine plate either
It does not start as easy with them set two clicks tighter.

The adjustment bolt has a 10mm head but it is a 6mm bolt. Thanks for the tidbit on the groove in the head of the bolt. I did check it, it's smooth.

Thanks for the help.

Try them at .55

youll love it, and u wont have those famous hanging RPMS that occur if the springs are too tight...

Since this is the first time I have replaced or adjusted the gov springs and basically still in the beginning learning stages of the Hi Perf diesel world, where would I measure the .55 that you mention.

I measured the difference between the top of the stud and the top of the adjuster nut. Stock configuration was .025" twenty five thousandths. After installing the new 3K GSK, I adjusted it down to where I had .045". The idle doesn't return as quickly as before and the idle is also higher than before. It is livable though. The engine feels a lot looser where it is now and with the new springs. That is probably to be expected??

If I measure .55 which to me is larger than 1/2", where will I be taking this measurement? Am I misunderstanding

Thanks, Don

I meant .55 thousands of an inch

I took the measurement from where the governer spring retainer nut is dented for the screwdriver to the top of the governer stud. It worked well for me.. i took measurements on both sides of the stud nut to ensure consistency on both sets of springs.. Ive also done this before for the other 3 ive put in...

If your idle does not return as quickly as before and u want it to actually be brought back quicker, loosen the springs one click only, that should help. its a trial and error process, If the idle is a little higher its ok..

By looser you mean that it accelerates quicker? and the tach seems to rise quicker? that is the point of the GSK! it will make ur truck more fun to drive...

I have never set an auto pump that tight.

lower the idle to where you like it, and the rpms will come down quicker!
