idle adjustment how to

Ok, sounds simple. I searched and read about it. I can barely see the bolt head. I can even barely put a finger on it. I can not get a wrench on it or the locknut, no matter how I go at it. Truck is a 98 12v with hydroboost brakes. Any ideas how to get at it? My idle has dropped, and occasionally stalls, and I can't run the AC at all.

take a small mirror and find it first, then you can see what you will need to do. I have done it on a 97,should be similar. It is hard to get to. Once you locate it, you will probably have to do it by feel. I think I used a 1/4 inch drive 10mm socket and a short open end wrench. With the engine running turn up the idle and tighten the jam nut. It might change on you when you tighten it. You have to repeat it until you get it where you want it.

I have a '98 also. It's doable for sure, but they don't call me "noodle arms" for nothin'! lol Might be helpful to use two people - one with a wrench on top and one with 3' of extensions coming from underneath. It also helps tremendously to tie the throttle back - gives more room to work on the bolt. Obviously, don't do that with the truck running. Took me probably 4 tries to get it just right.

So I finally got it. Lay over the engine and look straight down between the fuel filter and back of the injection pump, wearing my brightest LED headlamp. Snake my right arm around the hydroboost lines, and I could just get at it. Stubby 10mm combination wrench did the trick. Left hand can reach the throttle cable to help hold the arm out of the way of the adjustment screw. It would've been great to have a helper for every time I dropped the wrench. Truck idles well now, and my right arm is scratched to hell.

I stand on a milk crate & use a 10mm combo wrench to break the jam nut loose, then run the screw up until I have the desired idle rpm. Then hand snug the jam nut, & tighten it with wrench.
