Idea behind the converter lock-up switch?
Quick and simple- Whats the theroy and does it apply to pulling?
like possibly the ability to keep it in 3rd gear-locked up?

Well the idea is to transfer more hp to the ground instead of leting your tranny slip it away. When the tc is locked you are 1 to 1 with the engine no slippage its like a manual tranny. When its locked it doesn't create the heat that you get when your TC clutch slips so it runs much cooler however it is not good for mpg and is hard on the engine and if not used properly can be bad on the tranny too.

The stock converter ( and many aftermarket ones ) are too loose in fluid coupling. So, some ( including myself ) try just putting a lock-up switch in parallel to the computer. This way we can lock it when we want. Then it is much more efficient.
Problem comes when we find out the stock trans is poorly built and the converter and other clutches do not have correct pressures to apply them. Things slip, trans gets cotaminated and them failure. Complete rebuild then is needed. It is even worse with a modded Cummins.
