How to set 1997 Cummins valves???

Hello.

Can someone direct me to or forward me a procedure to set the valves on my 1997 Dodge Cummins 12 valve engine. I've set valves on small gasoline engines before but never on a large diesel engine. I'm specifically looking for the easiest way to perform this procedure without resorting to anything complicated (if possible). Please reply in this post or forward any procedures to myself at brian.irwin@flakeboard.com or sbirwin@sympatico.ca (P.S. I own a Dodge Haynes Repair manual however I'm confused how they get TDC - the small hole they're refering to to line up TDC I can hardly find it - anything simpler???) Thanking you in advance for any responses....

Access to timing pin

Thanks for the procedure link. A couple followup questions: Is there a trick to access the timing pin? I looked for mine and it seems to be in a very unaccessable position. Do you have to lay on the ground to get at it?? Also can you turn the engine over with a socket only or do you need to remove the injectors to reduce the compression & allow for easier turning?

Once again thanks for any responses. It's appreciated.

Use the companion cylinder like hotmopar mentioned. Its the method I used and worked perfectly. No need to use the timing pin. You'll need the barring tool if you want to use the timing pin. Otherwise you'll be turning the engine backwards.

No need to remove the injectors. I used the nut on the alternator. Engine turns no problem.
