Is it necessary to set valves??

I read that the 01 and newer engines do not need to have the valve lash checked or set. I have 477000 kms and was wondering if there was a need to check the settings. truck runs great.

I think that Cummins says to lash them at 150,000 miles.

I purchased my truck with 124,000 miles on odometer. I set the valves just to make sure they were right even though the truck was running great. Just wanted to make sure they were set right. There are some great threads on this board showing you how to do it. I think Cummins does say 150k for first valve adjust.

I have witnessed, helped with or done 5 valve lashes on 01's & 02's.... all between 100,000 & 150,000 miles (250,000 km).
All were within Dodges wide acceptable range and in ok shape. IMO, it's worth resetting them at .010 and .020; will probably make a small, but noticable difference.
