Help with Quicker Starting
Help with Quicker Starting
First I want to say thanks for everyone's advice and input on this site.. I have had great insight with the projects that I have done to my truck so far with your guys help on this forum.
Here is my problem.. when I go to start the truck and I turn the key the engine will crank about 3-4 times before it turns over. It used to be like 5-6 times until I did some maintenance. I have since replaced the fuel supply and return lines with the marine grade from the site advertised on this forum, as well as I changed the overflow valve this weekend. The fuel sending unit was replaced about 2 months ago. The truck runs good as far as I can tell. Ex. I installed a patio the other day loaded her down with about 1900lbs.. and it seemed to handle just fine, no hick-ups or anything. Now here is another bit of knowledge that may help.. If turn the key and at the same time the first crank is going to happen just tap, like a baby tap on the throttle it fires right up on the first try. Which leads me to believe it is a fuel supply possibly? I have searched through the history of other threads on this site and nothing is really coming up that is offering a solution. Now is this how it is suppose to be or can I expect better from starts.
97'2500 4wd CC LB 4.10 AUTO, I'm getting around 17-19mpg and currently has 46k on the odometer..

In that case, I think that you have an air leak. I would recheck all of the connections on the new fuel lines, especially that one on the return that is so hard to reach.
You might try to pressurize the tank a bit to locate the leak.

That sounds more like a "normal" P-7100 to me than anything else. Raising the idle Will help some, but I always just rest my foot on the throttle and it fires right up warm or cold. If I don't touch the throttle it has to crank a little longer. You won't hurt anything by using a little throttle to start your truck. In fact it is slightly easier on the starter itself.

Thanks for the info.. I will double check the fuel line connections. When the idle is adjusted too high it seems to start better, but when I mean too high. The 2nd time I took it to the dealer they put the idle up to 1100 rpm, and it was dang hard to keep the truck from wanting to pull forward when at stop. So I quickly re-adjusted that to the 750-800 rpm range spec'd by the Service Manual.

My 12V starts the same....
It has to crank 4-6 times if I just hit the starter, or maybe 1/2 rotation if I tap the pedal 1/4 way.
24V trucks automatically apply heavy fueling when initially cranking... (No need to hit the pedal)

I've learned to park my truck nose down in the driveway, rather than pulling it straight in, nose slightly up. It starts much faster this way.
I know, you must have an air leak. I did, but I took it to the shop to get it fixed, because I couldn't find it. I still may have a small one, but it works this way just fine.

I'll bet your air leak are the rubber lines just above the starter. if you want to find it, just use a rag and NO MORE THAN 5 PSI air put into the filler neck and you will find every leak you have. The rubber lines are known to leak just enough to allow air into the system and not let fuel out, that's why the air is used.

My truck used to require the slight touch on the throttle to start immediately. However, after I put in the 3000gsk, it now starts immediately. How did that happen? Just as soon as the starter hits, it starts now without any throttle at all.
I'm not complaining, I just don't know why...

Same situation, slight foot rest on the throttle (or a bit more when rather cold) and it pops off in 1/2 a second. Otherwise it's a 2-second crank to start up if I forget.
My '95 auto that I only owned for three months never required any throttle input--it started in 1/2 second all the time. Figure it's not really a problem for me....
