head lights/ park lights

hi again im having trouble with my head lights a while back my headlight started to flicker on and off and i noticed the switch got realy hot and melted some of the plug so i replaced the switch but then i could only either get headlights or parking lights but if i pushed the head light switch inbetween the two positions i can get both untill i hit a big bump or something then the switch will either move to just headlight or park light. if anyone could shed some light onto the situation it would very helpful.

Sounds like your new switch may be bad.

Check out installing relays on your headlights. They reduce the amount of current flowing through the switch, and your lights will be brighter.

Skog:

DTR Member Ronny Bailey is giving you good advice.

I have a 1996 Dodge CTD and can tell you that the headlight switches are weak. I have had to replace mine twice. The symptons you describe are telling me you have a bad switch Sir. When my two headlight switches went bad they did the exact same things.

I made up my own harness with relays for the headlights with heavy duty sockets for the bulbs. Made a noticeable difference to the brightness of the lights and reduces the switch problem.

I did the suvlight dot com conversion, and went with sport headlights, switch stays cool and it's much much brighter on the road at night.

Two good reads on relays:

http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...adlights.shtml

I built my harness from these two sites years ago. The switch never gets hot.
