I've had to replace mine twice. I'm not sure on whether or not it needs to be pressed in as I leave the driveline to a shop because I dislike rolling around on my back for anything other than fluid/filter changes and exhaust.

I changed mine out with a 20.00 bearing from the local auto supply. I had to do about 20 minutes or less of welding and drilling to mount it because the bolt holes were to wide. The only place I could find the correct bearing was at the dealer and they wanted around 140.00 for it. I have never used a press to change a carrier bearing on any vehicle. A press is probably the correct way to do it though.

I've changed the steady on my truck a couple of times. All i did pull the drive shaft off the truck and split it in half. You might have to use a little heat to get in inner part of the old bearing off. As far as putting the new one just find a piece of pipe the same size as the inner part of the bearing and tap in on. Thats how ive always done them.

I you go to Auto Zone or any other Auto parts house , the bearing they show for a 97 3500 is what I bought. The ID is the same as the factory part. But the whole pattern is different. I was like a pillow block bearing but it is a carrier bearing. What truck do you have?

I went to the local parts store and got one. There are two for these trucks one is for a manual and one for an auto and it comes in a unit or just a bearing i got the unit and it was easy.

While you're at it might as well replace the u-joints.
You're most of the way there and it's just a matter of time...

See Joseph Smith post on 12V page. He is in Panama and needs help with a part number for a carrier bearing. Infidel, do you have the numbers on hand? If you or anybody does I know he would appreciate the info or some help. I've been there and it ain't fun trying to find parts sometimes.

If you bust the bearing of the race, you can notch the race with a hack saw,
and wack it with a chisel, it will split..

Install: Clean the drive shaft extra good, tap it down slowly with the
hammer and brass bar stock, curved to fit the drive shaft.

Farmboy fix...
