Governor Spring Adjustment?

I heard about adjusting the stock governor spring to get a few more 100 rpm's out of it. Can anyone explain how to do this. I think it is an adjustment under the fuel plate....If so I am puting the afc sping in this weekend and would like try it while I was in that location. The more info the better...thanks guys!

Re:Governor Spring Adjustment?

You are most likely referring to the 3k and 4k governor spring kits. You can get them at www.piersdiesel.com. The 3k kit sells for $150. The 4k kit requires 60#/heavy duty valve springs and they are included in the $260 kit.

A search on subject should provide install info. The install requires working in tight quarters plus one can easily drop items into pump. A nice mechanic's magnet is a recommended tool to have on hand.

Jerry

Re:Governor Spring Adjustment?

I am familiar with the kits......but this was an adjustment on the original spring. A tightener that if you tighten a few extra clicks would give you a few extra rpm's. Andy at Smokin Diesel told me about the other day, but they have been busy this week and I haven't been able to get a hold of him to clarify how to do it. I think he said it was an adjustment under the fuel plate.

It is ..... pull the cam plate out .... rotate the engine until you see the spring pack ... there are 2 ... in the center of the spring retainer .. you will see a stud with a slotted collar around it .. turn the collar a couple of clicks clockwise. Rotate the engine until the next pack comes up .. and do exactly the same ... You will need to adjust your idle speed when you are done ...

how many rpm's will it increase?

That is subective to each pump ... 100-200 is the best I've seen ... for the amount of fooling around you have to do ... you are better off getting the 3K springs and be done with it. If you tighten them too much you will lose control of your idle adjustment.

You may get about 150-200 RPM with 2 clicks tighter. The truck may not start as quickly and you may notice a touchy throttle off idle.

The 3K kit in your 2175 CPL really wakes the truck up. You will get 3200-3300 RPM before defuelling occurs. Inertia will take the engine to 3600 RPM under power if you're not careful.

Marc
