Exhaust housings ???

Ok I am starting to look around for an exhaust housing for my stock turbo, probley a 14 or 16. My question is there are wastgated and nowastgated. I know one has a waste gate and the other dosent but why are they differnt? Dose not having a waste gate on the turbo no effect anything but give you more boost or do you need to external have some sort of a blow off and will it still conect back up right if you have a no wastgated turbo housing? If some one could help me explain to me why there are 2 types please let me know. I'm stumped, please help the dumb guy here.

thanks,
Adam

The wastegate lets you control boost. With a wastegated housing you can limit boost to keep from overspeeding the turbo. A wastegate is the best way to control boost.

With the stock compressor on the turbo you should limit boost to about 35psi. Boost also depends on fueling level. With stock fueling, a non-wastegated housing won't cause excessive boost.

As for hooking up to the downpipe, the 16cm non-wastegated will require the downpipe to be moved ahead slightly.

A smaller turbo housing produces more boost at lower rpms (spool up) but without a wastegate will over speed the turbo at higher rpms.
A larger housing like a 16 is slow to spool up, aren't as likely to over speed and thus don't need or often come with a wastegate.

I've played around with lots of different turbos, a 14 wastegated is my favorite all around.

I agree with the above. I run a 12 without the wastegate hooked up but I am going to add more fuel so a 14 will serve me better at higher rpm. I have been told on the 12 valves a 16 is good for towing. I have a 16 with about 50 miles on it if you are interested pm me. It was too laggy for fun especially when you are used to a 12.

Ok I see, that makes sence now. I'm not sure if I want to go with a 16 or a 14 I tow some but I still wanna have some fun. I'll have to think about it for a bit here. I might be getting back with you Hayseed. Also if a had the 16 and some DDP stage 2 injectors do you think it would be lagging as bad with the extra fuel? Thanks again.

Extra fuel should make it spool better. For towing I'd go with a housing bigger than the stock 12. The 14cm wastegated is basically the "ultimate" housing, but it's very pricey. A 16 should work well for towing and keep EGT's in control.
