My 1997 ctd is giving me some trouble. Its stock except for straight pipe, and k&n.

after the engine has reached operating temp, and I am sitting at a stop. I rev the engine up, and it starts to miss and blow white smoke at around 2300 rpms on up.

now if im driving down the road and i drive it regular it does not do this, but if i am driving and i shift at 3000 every gear, it will do this.

so basically, if i jam the accelarator pedal down all the way it sputters and misses and blows white smoke from about 2300-3000rpms.

sounds like your timing has slipped.

 

I would also suspect the timing has slipped, but you might also check the fuel filter if its been a while since the last change.

 

check the screen in the fuel heater. Mine was completely clogged and I was sucking big gulps of air into my feul sustem causing it to stall.
That screen is the first filter in the system

 

Thanks guys. It has been awhile since i have cleaned the fuel screen in that truck. when i bought it back in 2000, the screen was so dirty that it would kill the engine. it has also been awile since i have changed the fuel filter. i think this will be my first plan of attack.

then have timing set to 15. (i want to do this anyway)

 

where is this screen loacated? My truck does this too, and I know the timing has slippped, but I need to clean the screen, and change the filter.

its the fuel heater/prefilter. its a bowl with a screen inside.

 

Before you get too carried away, check the overflow valve, also.

 

another stupid question, Where is the overflow valve?

 

I personally would check for water in the fuel .. don't trust the WIF light.. I have had the same problem before .. under those symptoms that would be the first thing I checked.. You can drain the fuel filter, plus add some power service to the tank.... It should cure the problem.. It is the cheapest and easiest place to start....

In the pic URL'd above, the arrow pointing to the high pressure injection pump has its pointer on the fuel pump on the outboard side. At that same location on the inboard side is the overflow valve. You can easily give it a "ballpark" test. With the engine stopped, pump the lift pump thumb button. The overflow valve should give a "honk" or "squeak" in no more than 1 or 2 strokes. If it makes no noise, or takes numerous strokes, it's no good. If it makes its noise right away, it's strong enough to support engine fuel needs as stock, but to be really certain, a gauge is needed.
