Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

Came to a stop light today and the idle kept pushing the truck (auto) stoped the truck but it was pushing and pushing. Pulled over and put it in neutral, it idled at 1500 rpms.
Sounds like it oculd be missing.
WHen driving, once i get on the throttle its like it should be, but theres hesitation when i only put the pedal in a little.
when in neutral and giving it gas, smoke pours out of the exhaust.
HELP?
Thanks
Josh

99 24v with edge, and HO injectors, and straightpipe.
I just got the truck, so i don't know too much about it.
Seems like it woule be the idle position sensor on a gas engine.

Take out your Edge and see what it runs like. It might have gone out on you.

Check the engine codes to see what they say.

Re:Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

If you turn the key On/Off three times it should start to give you the codes. It will read out in you odometer.

Re:Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

That procedure started in the mid '99 model year.
Some do, some don't.

Might have to check out the local auto parts chain.
Most of the larger ones will pull and erase codes for free.

Re:Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

My '99 will run the codes on the odometer by holding the button in for 5 or 10 seconds, then turning the key on while still holding the button in. I don't think I've ever had a code set because it cycles thru and then flashes all the instrument lights, pegs the gauges, then returns to normal. It goes thru the sequance without stopping. I picked it up on one the threads here.

Re:Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

Its one of the sensors I think...apps, cps or something like that. I"m gonna start witht he cheapest sensor and go from there.
Is it safe to drive when its smoking and such like it is?
The nearest auto place is about 10 miles away.
Thanks
Josh

Re:Extremely High Idle, Missing, and Smoke

I'd give 'em a call first and see if they'll pull the codes for you.
Why buy parts you don't need?
