EGT question
EGT question
This weekend was the first trip with our camper more than 40 miles. I now have a question about towing egt. While running up the low grades in the area I noticed that at time the egt would approach 1050 deg. at 16 lb. of boost at which I would let off to reduce temps. If I gave it more fuel it would increase the temperature without more boost. On other hills the boost would be in the 18 to 19 lbs range and the egt would stop at 1000 deg. I was not taking mental notes on rpm range but speeds were between 60 and 65 mph on four lane highway. I know that interstates can be deceptive as to the grade but I belive that hills were close to same grade. I do have a five speed with 3.54 gearing. I thought more fuel would increase boost without a significant increase in egt when running approx 2000 rpm and the boost pressure was not above 28 or 29 psi. Just a question for you felllas with more experince and/or knowledge about this.
Thanks
Thanks

I don't think I'm ever under 1,000 degrees on the level. On hills, I'm usually topping the hills over 1,200 degrees. Some of them have been 1,400 degrees. I have pulled my camper well over 2,000 miles and no problem at all. The only time I get concerned is if I'm holding 1,400 and 40 pounds of boost for more than 30 seconds. Now, I don't like my egt's as hot as they are but it is not hurting anything that I can find.
Let's say I enjoy playing it safe while traveling with the family. My question is really why would EGT increase while boost remained the same if I gave it slightly more fuel in the 2K rpm range while running around 16 psi. Thanks for the vote of confidance to run in the yellow on my gauge but I figure it's like the trafic lights in Maryland....... yellow means STOP! (It's where my wife is from)
I have been known to give her a hard time about it.
