Question Dry Bearing sound?

Hi Everyone,

During my first real road trip in my new to me truck I started to hear a dry bearing sound when under load. The sound seemed to be coming from below about mid truck. Any ideas as to where it may have been coming from. I do not hear it when just traveling on normal city commutes.

Thanks for reading.

Have you noticed if it happens in all gears/speeds? I've noticed that the torque of the Cummins, especiall at lower rpms, seems to amplify any noises (gear rattle) that are already in the drivetrain under heavy load.

Hi gorms,

I think I noticed it more in 4th gear as I was in 4th climbing some steeper terrain. I also noticed the truck kinda groan quite alot more than usual "hard to describe sound" , maybe that is normal as the Rockies air gets lean as well when climbing and it was very hot.A good test performance wise, was on fairly old Hwy 7 going towards Prince George has lots of different roads.
It is an older truck and I am still working on bugs in the steering but am making progress. I now need a good alignment after installing Lukes link for the track bar. I am hoping that will make alot of difference.

Thanks.

do you have a 4wd or 2wd truck? if you have a 2 piece driveline id check the carrier bearing (AKA Center Support Bearing). That wud give you that dry bearing rough sound about mid vehicle like you are describing. like i said thats IF its a 2 piece driveline. i have a 4x4 and its a 1 piece

Sorry it is a 4wd. I was looking under it today and I saw a large donut shaped
thing " bearing?" right where the drive shaft exits the tc <- I think it is the transfer case and heads towards the rear diff. That may be the dry bearing if so. I will have to go and look closer.
Thanks for the input.

Thats a balancer on the driveshaft. Since you have a reg cab, you have a one piece shaft, so no bearings in your driveline.

Thanks Tate,

I just took a look and saw it is solid metal for sure. So maybe in the TCase or something else? I guess it will become louder in time maybe the rear end??

Thanks
