dropping oil pan

is it possible to drop the oil pan and change the gasket on these without lifting the engine up a bit. the truck is stock height and it looks like there is very little room to drop it and change the gasket. just bought the truck and its got a few little bugs to work out. havent messed with the 12 valves much. any help is appreciated

No it is not possible to pull the pan with out lifting the engine a little. However mine has 107 thousand and every time I thought the pan was leaking it was something else. Just thought you might want to check every thing first.

the dang pan bolts are loose so i think i will try to tighten them up before anything else. my 01 did the same thing but not to this extreme. this leak is pretty bad. like a quart every 25 miles. i was wondering if its possible to just drop the pan as much as possible and then snake the gasket around the crankshaft and put it back together. where does the oil pickup tube drop into the pan? is it in the sump ?

You can pull the pan without lifting the engine, but you'll have to drop your tranny to do it. The oil pickup attaches to the block at the front of the engine.

I don't think loose pan bolts would allow that much. Don't tighten them too much. Overtorquing squishes the gasket where the bolt goes thru and deforms the pan rim enough to make it leak between the bolts.

the leak is really bad at the front of the pan. i did look at everything else and have come to the conclusion that it is the pan gasket. i dont see why it couldnt loose that much oil from the pan being loose. if its loose enough it would pour out right? i am not gonna gorilla torque them, cause im sure it will push the gasket out. but if they are finger tight i would imagine they should be tighter

Some guys have reported success by dropping the pan down as much as possible, then pulling/cutting the old gasket out. Then to install the new one they put a clean slice in the gasket between two bolts so they can feed the gasket in around the pickup tube. Then just seal up the splice with some black RTV. Just a thought if you really, REALLY don't want to lift the engine.

Did you look real closely at the bottom of the gear case? I recently read a post where the KDP had broken the boss for the RPM sensor out of the case. It isn't much of a stretch to think one could break the case open at the bottom.

Did you reseal the threads on the bolts in the front of the pan? They WILL leak. After I put my MITUSA pump on my, now sold 3rd GEN. I didn't do as Opie said, well it leaked..............Hose it off with brake clean and reseal the bolts in the front of the pan. Put RTV on the threads and the shoulder of the bolt. Let us know....

yeah i scoped it out really good. i wiped it down and the only fresh oil i could find was seeping out of the pan gasket. i will try that rtv on the bolts. never heard that but its worth a shot. my problem is i bought the truck about 200 miles away and couldnt get it back here last weekend. so i left it at my grandpas winter house in phoenix and i am goin up this weekend to get it. just want to get it sealed up good enough to get er back here to the shop. and i cant drop the pan there cause its an old peoples RV park, and they dont much like oil on the ground

Hey Brother. If there are no parts missing out of the oil pan gasket, reseal the bolts. Use [B]BLACK rtv. It'll get you back. If I remember right the torque on the pan bolts is 18ftlbs MAX. Give it a swing and let us know. Semper Fi
