different ways to adjust timing??
hey guys...i have read that there are lazy ways to bump the timing...withoutb ever using the dial indicator method...
the reason im asking is that when i had my timing done...my gear cover was greased right...and when i got the truck back i couldnt find any evidence that they had touched the timing gear cover since they're supposed to remove it right? anyways i noticed a chalk mark on my alternator..hmmm..and these guys were done in 20 min...i just drank a coffee around the corner
my timing is indeed advanced and truck runs great
anyone know these methods??

You don't have to remove the entire cover, just the oil fill tube on the front of the cover. I'm not sure why you would have a mark on your alternator, though? Are you pretty confident in the work these guys do? Did they tell you they set it at 15.5 or are you guessing? You gotta be careful with the timing issue. I had a local shop that said "they knew where to set my timing". I believed them, then 6 months later I had a blown head gasket.

They said that they know if they move it a certain amount it is good to go. The problem is that they never checked where it was, so how do they know how far to move it? Get it done correctly, not by a guess.

I took no chances, and had gunracer1 time my truck.. No problems since then.... Did it once, did it right, and am happy with the results...
Something is fishy if they were done in 20 mins only..

Let me guess.....Turner did the timing? There is absolutely no way to verify timing without measuring the plunger depth. If this wasn't done you won't have a clue what the timing was set at.
yep Turner did it...super fast...no a finger print worth of evidence anywhere...don't u remember they're the same guys that wouldnt sell me the luke's links because "its better to get a job done right not just patch things up"...this timing thing has just been on my mind for a while...i had it done a while back..
You shoud really check the timing to see where they left it at. Hopefully its somewhere close to where you want it and you won't have to do anything else, and hopefully it won't slip either. Look for loss of power and white smoke. I did my own and it took me only a few hours, its not exaclty 16 because I bumpped the gear a bit, but I measured it twice and it is about 15.8, which is close enough.

yeah they claim it to be at 15.5...i have nothing to compare that to except to the original timing I had..with the timing where it is now it really woke the truck up...I was just curious at these quickee methods to do timing...seems to be a few shops doing it by feel only
