difference between transmission filters

Was there a difference in the 47RE transmissions? It looks like they took two different filters.

My transmission takes the one in the second picture, but the Carquest guy originally gave me the first one. When I said it took the second one, he told me I must not have a 47RE. I thought that was strange since the truck build sheet says it has the 47RE.

It's been a few weeks since I've been on the forum. Does anybody have an answer to this? I already knew about the casting stamp info that fschiola mentioned. No offense, but that does little good. The above metioned pictures are robbed from the Fleetgard site, and both pictures refer to a 47RE filter.

It seems I read somewhere about the correct filter being used, seemed there was 2 different for the same trans. try a search, or?? I would definatly use the same looking filter and dont assume both will work, i recall they werent interchangeable.

You are correct apache. The two filters are not interchangeable at all. Unfortuantely, I was sold the one in the first picture, and after pulling the pan, realized I needed the one in the second picture. I was at my parent's house, which is 18 miles from the parts shop. I guess it gave my friends and I a good excuse to go pick up pizza.

FYI - Dave Goerend told me either will work. If the truck comes with the second pictured filter, but you decide to use the first, you simply install the third screw (for storage I guess) prior to installing the filter.
