cranks a few times before starting
Re:cranks a few times before starting
No, the star wheel has nothing to do with this. The star wheel is located in the AFC housing which is bolted to the top of the governor.

The governor springs are located in the lower region of the governor, i.e. below the fuel cam plate. You access the governor springs through the inspection port on the side of the governor or through the openning that the fuel cam plate covers up. If you have not replaced your factory governor springs with after market ones then chances are your "too many cranks before starting" problem is simply a case of having your idle too low. If you have replaced your governor springs, then you, or whoever installed them, may have installed them "too tight."

Yeah I need to tap my go pedal to help mine too! I don't mind, I put out a nice big cloud into the rice burner sitting next to me ;D
My truck idles around 800 rpm

Re:cranks a few times before starting
Just another thot here, my 96 was doing the same thing, not hard to start, just a little harder than it had been. 2 days ago, starter began to act up, wouldn't do anything when I hit the key. Lite tap, repeat, LITE tap with a small hammer and it'd turn over fine. Replaced the solenoid contacts and the starter motor brushes, the brushes were the problem, and voila! It starts immediately now. Apparently, with the dying brushes, the starter motor turns over more slowly. Can't say for sure that's what the problem is, but it sure took care of mine.

Re:cranks a few times before starting
Well, before you spend a lot of time making the truck start ot the first crack, consider that manufacturers spend time trying to give their engines a few cranks before they start. The couple of cranks gives the oil time to circulate before the engine fires full time.
george
Re:cranks a few times before starting
My '98 did the same thing, wouldn't start at all without giving is a touch on the pedal. I turned up the AFC and now it fires up within a couple cranks with no help at all.
