Cost effectiveness question

I am going to replace the tranny in my 98 12v QC 4x4 this winter. I am torn between going manual and buying the DTT trans. How hard is the manual swap (I like manuals in diesals, personal preference, not to mention better MPG) and what is the price difference? I guess the manual tranny of choice is the NV4500- right? It is about, what 900 bucks for the TQ- so I would be willing to spend the same on a good STREET clutch.

If you have an auto now I would recommend you stay that way. Yes, you could convert it to a manual, but it is a lot of work. Have you checked with other tranny vendors? I am very happy with mine and it was many $ less expensive than the others. The difference is a real WOW feeling. Just ask anybody that has replaced one.

I like what I have heard about the DTT trans- and it is about the same price (I think) unit to unit as the manual- of course, the swap costs money in the auto-to-manual deal as well.

If you get the nv4500 make sure you research the 5th gear problems, I've lost 5th gear 2x's in the last 50, 000 miles. research that for sure before you make a decision. I will end up spending over $1200 all in all to get it working again if I pay to have it fixed the right way with a new main shaft with longer splines than the factory main shaft.

I think the DTT trans is going to be cheaper unless you have a cheap source for a good NV4500. The truck will be quicker with the automatic, and the tighter converter will help the economy. I've driven a DTT equipped truck and was really impressed with it, instant response instead of the slushy feeling the stock tranny has. I think you'll be very happy with the DTT.

I have to side with Tom on this one. I am not knocking DTT, but they have the name, while GB simply builds excellent transmissions. He also has the best warranty in the biz, can you say lifetime warranty on the converter and 100K on the tranny? Oh yeah, unlimited HP, too. I would give dave a call before you make ANY decisions.

Here's a site you might want to check out. I have the stage V, it's a bit costly but I'll never worrier about it any more.
