can you simply pull the injectors out and clean them and if so what do you clean them with?

 

No need to pull them, just use any one of the numerous injector cleaning fuel additives available.
If that doesn't do I'd let a diesel shop do it. Many shops now use ultrasonic cleaning machines that pump backwards though the injector while the ultrasonic vibrates deposits loose.
