To Change KDP or not???

Hi. I posted about how to change the damaged fan pulley on my 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 3/4 4x4 12 valve Cummins. A guy told me about the KDP issues. I am kind of freaked out about it, very doubtful I could do myself. If I did it looking at $70 parts and 4 hours labor (at least $250 in my area). The truck has just over 300k, and runs great. Bad part is my front fenders/rockers/are rusting away. Originally I was prepared to change out the belt tensioner with a new one, change the fan pulley with a used one I bought off eBay, and install a new belt (bought it). The wife is going to go bonkers if I spend too much. I already have new rear M+S tires on my wish list...Any thoughts on how big a risk I am taking to ignore the KDP would be appreciated. Thank you....

At over 300k. I would save my money, especially if you cannot do it yourself. It is a simple secure, but at your mileage. I would leave it. Goodluck,,Rick

I would say ignore it ONLY if you are willing to gamble losing your truck to the carnage that could happen at any moment. I purchased a used '97 a while back with 200k on the clock. First thing I had done on the truck was the KDP, and it was a good thing too as it had less than 1/8" left to go...
Depending on where you are in Nebraska, you might be able to find someone local to help you do the job, or possibly do it for you in exchange for some barley pop...
Good luck with your truck either way.

Without a doubt - fix it - you have to secure it not change it. If it falls out it can be bad enough that you have to pull the cam. NOT A CHEAP repair. $250 is a drop in the bucket compared to what a repair costs.

And just because yout truck has 300k doesnt mean its not going to work its way out.

If you want an idea what a repair involves - have a look at this (its a big job):

quite honestly if you can read the directions from the fix kit & work a ratchet you should be able to handle the kdp. it's alot cheaper than replacing the motor.

This is some great feedback. So far I have 75% say to fix it. I looked at Dr Evil's video that sure is alot of stuff to remove. Seems you have to remove everything in front of the motor! Thanks.

1950GMC,

The videos posted show the repair involved if the dowel pin comes loose and flies around in the gear housing creating all kinds of damage. This amout of labor is not involved in retaining the KDP.

Here is some info you can review: http://www.xtremediesel.com/manuals/1040182.pdf

I fabricated a tab and installed it over the KDP. If you do this job get a piece of cardboard shaped like the gear housing cover. As you remove the retaining bolts place them on the cardboard in their relative positions. These bolts are different lengths. Be sure to check torque on all the bolts that you see. Also for the seal kit, I placed my cover in the oven at about 250* for 30 or so minutes and the seal in the freezer. I then set everything up ready to install. The seal went right into the cover. Some seem to have a hard time installing the seal kit. Hope this helps.

Not that bad of a job, for a lot of reassurance.

I posted the links - and I did specify that "If you want an idea what a REPAIR involves - have a look at this"

Is there some reason why BD Diesel does not show a KDP kit for a 93' 12 valve?

You should still take care of the KDP even with your mileage. For all you know it could fall out next week.

Its a big job, but not really hard - just time consuming.

Click the link below to see some pictures of whats involved.

Unhappy update on KDP

Well I finally got around to changing out the bad fan pulley (BTW clockwise loosens the big nut). I also did the KDP fix (mine was almost flush at 302k), and changed out the belt tensioner. Got everything back together and the new belt is WAY loose. Going back to parts store to get a tad shorter belt tommorrow. Also found out I have about $300 in font end work to do...

FIX it. I was always going to fix mine then at 280,000miles it fell out and cracked the timing case, but I was lucky the motor was fine.
Its not a bad job to tab it, a little time consuming.
