Can oil go backwards through the Oil Pump?

Just like the title asks. I'm wondering if motor oil can go backwards through the oil pump... Cause I know on some engines, the oil pump gears are tightly meshed together which acts like a check valve.

It wouldn't pump oil out of the pan if it was turned backwards if that's the question. There's nothing to prevent oil from draining back through the pump when the engine is shut off.

Ok thanks... So oil can flow backwards through the pump and into the oil pan when the engine is shut off. That's what I wanted to know.

My filter will syphon half the filter dry overnight so it must. The only way it could do that is through the pump. The Dodge engines drop an inch or so the commercial engine does over half the filter.

I don't think there are any check valves in the system, and they do drain back when shut down. This is why it takes about 10-15 sec to get oil pressure when you first start it up.
