Can I swap for a 2nd/3rd gen fuel filter ?
Yes - the top-loading filter is very user-friendly, with it's drop-in convenience - you will need to modify the fuel pipes incl the injector fuel-return pipe - compare your spin-on system with the top-loading cannister, noting the lengths and fittings on each pipe - helps to have the pipes and fittings from the later engine - the injector-return pipe can be extended with clamped rubber Diesel-fuel hose - installation will require repositioning of the main engine harness for easier top-loading access - the first version mounts like the 12v filter head, where the 90* angle bolts to the top of the intake manifold - the later versions, without the 90*, mount to the side of the intake manifold - the early version cannister is cast to accept the lift pump - the later versions are cast for use with the in-tank lift pump
If you're going to go though the hassle why not just convert to the type John Deere uses?
No bolts, no spinning. Filter is glass with two o-ringed ports on the back that push down onto two nipples. A spring loaded bracket snaps over it to hold in place.
Changing a filter takes five seconds max...

I have 8 2 micron filters leftover from my 3rd gen, I was going to reuse them, besides I think the new design is much better. I might relocate it too to be able to access it easily.
