Can you run 2nd gen turbo on 3rd gen truck?

Hey all,

I'm trying to find out if you can (without major work) get a 2nd gen turbo to work on a 3rd gen truck. I am interested in doing the 2nd gen manifold exchange, and when I do it, I'd like to throw a different turbo on it.

I'm going to put small (25hp) injectors in for better mpg, so there won't be a ton of fuel to lite a big turbo..but I'm not real sure what I should go with. Only tow about 8K..nothing real big.

I was going after a HTT 62/12, but the deal fell through, so I'm looking again. I see very few used turbos for the 3rd gen trucks, and the price is usually up there, but I see a few more from 2nd gens, and they seem to be a bit less money as well, so it got me thinking why not try to put a turbo/manifold combo from a 2nd gen on my truck.

I'm sure I'd have to run a boost fooler, or something like that along with a mechanical wastegate, but I'm not sure of anything else that would need to be done to make it work.

I have no real idea what turbo to look for if I can do a switch, as I'm just starting to learn about the 3rd gen turbos, much less the 2nds, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It is possable to run a 2nd gen turbo, its not very cost effective. Swaping the manifolds makes it even more expensive, you will need a hx-40 downpipe, compressor outlet elbow, oil drain tube, and oil line.

If you just buy a replacment turbo for your truck you will save yourself alot of work and money. You can buy a new aftermarket turbo for $1400 or so, and it will bolt right up.

That is the biggest reason I want to do it....I've never cared for the sound of this truck, so switching the manifold will change it a bit more than just the 5". I know that will be an additional cost, just wanted to see how big of a headache it would be to run a 2nd gen turbo as well.

Isnt the 2nd gen turbo smaller, which would hurt performance and make EGT's go up, and Im pretty sure you can run a 3rd gen. turbo on a 2nd gen man. if your so worried about the sound.

Sure you can do it, just need to change a few things. Downpipe, exhaust manifold, turbo elbow, oil drain. The oil line may work okay. I used a 2nd gen oil line on my 3rd gen setup.

I'm assuming your looking for an aftermarket turbo that fits a 2nd gen and you aren't stepping backwards and going to a HX35?

That would be correct...I should have clarified that better. It would be an aftermarket turbo that would fit on a 2nd gen....I don't want to go backwards from what I already have..
