Bluish Smoke when cold

When I start my truck in the morning it smokes a bluish color until it warms up a bit. It doesn't smell like oil so I'm thinking it's not a valve guide. It's a burn the eyes smoke. I've ran 2 tanks of fuel with Standyne through it, got the timing set @ 16. I get 30# boost at WOT so I'm thinking it's not a boost leak. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Re:Bluish Smoke when cold

When it is hot and you go from cruise to a stop or near stop(in gear) and then start off again is there any sign of blue smoke? Try going down a long hill with your foot OFF the accelerator and then at the bottom of the hill accelerate. Does this produce any blue smoke? If it does then the chances are that it is valve seals. Not necessarily valve guides. Just the seals.

Thanks Mextan. I've had a few Chevy smallblocks that I've had to do the valve seals on. This just doesn't seem like oil. It burns the eyes. The oil level is still above 1/2 way between the marks in 2200+ miles, with leaky valve covers. I've seen this problem on here before but a search doesn't turn it up. The truck has 220Km, about 137,000 miles.

Are you running with any additives in the fuel at this time? If so then I suggest that you run it out to near empty and fill up with straight diesel and no additives. See if that makes a difference to burning of the eyes. If no eye burning then after using about 1/4 tank and still no problems, add the additive again and stick your eyeball into the exhaust and see what happens.
BTW, what engine oil are you using?

I know that I shouldn't do this but when my truck idles for a long length of time I get a lot of blue smoke. I belive it maybe unburned fuel from the low combustion temps. Am I right?

I'm using Castrol RX Super 15-40. Do you think it could be junk fuel?

Re:Bluish Smoke when cold

I have noticed in the winter that it smokes less when the grid heaters cycle, so I believe you're right about unburnt fuel from low combustion temps. There seems to be an excess of smoke though. I can see it drifting past the passenger window when I stop at the first set of lights about a 1/2 mile from home.

Maybe someone put some POD injectors in there while you were sleeping.

I know mine smokes quite a bit while sitting still. But, that is the price you have to pay to have the power. ;D ;D
