Bad Cylinder???

As much as I hate it I think I may have a bad cylinder > :'(. Im blowing an awful lot of oil out of my crank case bleed tube (enough to coat the undercarriage of my truck with a light film of oil).I was told I may have a bad cylinder or maybe a ring. If I am wrong please tell me because Ive been told it is expensive enough that Id be better off buying a new motor, is this true? Has anyone else ran into this before, if so please help. Also if at all possible, can someone tell me about how much $$$ it will cost me to fix minus labor.
Thanks
Wheels

some blow by is acceptable but if its covering the whole underside of your truck then there is a problem. Try adjusting your valves first thing you might be getting a bit of blowby if they are to tight. if that doesnt help your gonna have to pull the injectors and do a compression test to see if you have a dead hole. good luck.

DJ

Re:Bad Cylinder???

This is from a very good Source from another Dodge Diesel Website forum: "Sounds like you might have a bad internal seal on your lift pump. Once the lift pump starts leaking a bit of fuel into the engine, you will begin to produce all kinds of oil that will drip out the draft tube.

You may want to check your fuel filters to be sure that the lift pump is not trying to pump against plugged filters. That is the usual cause of lift pump failure, other than simply old age drying out the seals."

I can testify to this as when my lift pump started leaking externally from the primer, it apparently was leaking internally also as I was getting all kind of oil out the vent tube. Once I replaced the lift pump, the vent tube was passing next to nothing out as I had a clear plastic bottle attached to it. Went from half full every 2 days to nothing in 2 weeks.

Re:Bad Cylinder???

Im gonna run a compression test later today and see if that tells me anything, then I will try the fuel filter. If that doesnt work Ill go from there. Ive also heard I could have a problem with my delivery valves, could that be a possibility? Im not gonna get my hopes up but it looks as if it may not be a bad cylinder afterall.
Thanks
Wheels

Re:Bad Cylinder???

I don't see how delivery valves could cause a problem they don't have anything to do with the crankcase. If you were getting that much fuel into your crankcase you would be able to pull the dipstick and see that you are gaining more oil every day on the stick.

DJ
