Auto trans problems.

Gents,
I was driving my rig into town today drove fine no noticeable problems. Parked it at the store and came out to find it wouldn't shift through the drive gears. Reverse was solid no issues. When put in drive or 2nd, 1st same issues only 5mph or so and high rpm's. Didn't feel like it ever engaged the gears properly. Checked the fluid in neutral and fluid was slightly over max and had kind of a metallic or bizarre smell to it. Not really a burnt smell but something else.
I found out from the previous owner the trans was replaced 35,000miles ago by the dealer. Any ideas on what maybe causing this? Had it towed to a tranny shop to get it checked out. Like I said reverse has no issues. Went from running really good to the trans all of a sudden taking a crap.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Greg

Would this be possibly related to the trans output shaft sensor? The truck was also warmed up when it happened. 98 dodge ram as listed in my profile.
Basically just stalls and won't engage drive, 2nd, 1st.

One thing I forgot to mention. I replaced both batteries with new ones right before this happened. Didn't think it was related at all. Maybe it had some codes thrown when this happened.

FWIW, I had much the same thing happen, lost TCC lockup one day, next day lost all gears.

In the end, the TC clutch had failed and the clutch facing fines had plugged the tranny filter.

My trans had been rebuilt by a supposedly reputable place right at 30K before, and to tell you the truth, I had no clue anything, and I mean anything was wrong, right up to the point the TC dumped, it was solid as a rock.

Mine works good now, other than TC lockup, just changed the filter and fluid. I will have to limp it for a bit until I get the $$ for Goerend tranny.

The thing that doesn't make sense is reverse is completely fine. Which means the TC is probably fine. Only the drive gears are the issue. I am hoping to limp it along until next year. My next tranny will be the Goerend as you stated. Its the 5grand I don't have right now for a bullet proof trans.

Latest news on the tranny. The shop said it was junk. They said they could rebuild it for $2800. I said no thanks. Anyway I thought I would have to get it towed to the house. Started up and drove it 15 miles before it started slipping. Ran perfect cold. As soon as it started to warm up is when it started slipping. The last couple of miles to the house was 20mph. Made it to the dirt road and drove it in reverse the remaining distance to the house which was another mile. Reverse was perfect no issues.
Any chance I can limp this along some more. Dump a couple of bottles of Lucas saver in it or adjust the bands or something? Any ideas? Thanks.
