Question Auto trans problems?

I know this has been covered before, (did a search), but was confused at the answers.

My truck is a '96 auto, and has 205k miles on it. Yes the tranny has lived THIS long! I do baby my truck, and service the trans every 20k miles.

Just the last few days, it's developed a problem: when cold, it starts in 2nd gear. I had the tranny serviced, didn't help (looked good in the pan...). As soon as it warms, it's fine.

Line pressure? Solenoid? I'd like to stretch this transmission as long as I can, (it's personal now!) I tow a 26' Thoroughbed on occasion, (about 6k pounds).

Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Jim

my first guess is a sticky govoner. the late style govoners have alum. anodized valves and I have seen then stick fron wear in the bore. if you have a pressure gauge than check for gov. pressure at a stand still. it should be 0 and climb app. 1 PSI to 1 MPHbelow 45MPH as a rule ( dont need to exact ).

you will need a 0-100 psi gauge with a 1/8 pipe fitting on a long hose. the port you need to check is on the passenger side of the truck at the rear of the transmission just ahead of the extention housing . when you look above the rear of the pan there will be a plug that comes in from the passenger side near the top of the case. it will have a 7/16 hex head on it. that is the govenor port.
