Auto tranny 96 ram 2500 Tranny Shutter
My 96 ram 2500 with 5.9 cummins started to shutter and stall when dropped into gear. It would not do it when cold only after warm up. It was a qt. and a half low on tranny fluid. I filled it and the problim went away. It still shutters at around 1500 rpm under light acceleration. Feels like you are on a road with light wash board ruts. Can you help??
Your torque converter is more than likely the problem. When the torque converter starts getting worn, they will shudder at lower RPM's under light throttle. Its really not to much to worry about if your truck is stock,a nd it doesent slip any once you step down on the throttle some, but if your truck is modified to the point the converter slips when accelerating hard, then you probably need an aftermarket one. Mine shudders, but i have some more power, and im looking for an aftermarket one as soon as i find one in my price range, that i have heard good things about. There are a few converters better than stock for about $500, which would probably be more than fine for a truck like mine or yours, but if you go with a big name brand aftermarket converter, it will cost you more around 1 thousand dollars. More than likely your torque converter is starting to get worn some, because that causes them to shudder. I would probably just drive it for now, until it starts really acting up, or if you dont mind spending the money for a better torque converter. Hope this helps. Im sure others will chime in soon
