Advice for starting a 12V after a long nap
I'm getting a 12V out of a very late 98 (DEC97) truck for my very early 98.5 24V (FEB98). I'm not p-pumping mine, I'm swapping the whole engine - electronics, wiring, and all. The donor has been sitting for a pretty long time, so I need some tips to get it up and running without hurting it. Is there any way to prime the oiling system like a gas engine? I would like to get as much oil pumped through it as possible to reduce scuffing. I don't think it will be possible to get it running before I yank it because it is a theft recovery, and the ignition switch was totally destroyed by the theives. I'm building a pallet for it, so I should be able to get it started with a battery and a small gas tank when I get it out. The donor is the green truck, and its heart is going into the silver one.
I've started many engines that have been sitting for some time, just drop a battery in and fire it up. If you really want to circulate oil before turning it over, you'll have to get creative as the oil pump is gear driven. You could take a piece of pipe, with a reducer on both ends, one with a hose to hook to the oil galley and the other end with a fitting to add air presssure to push some oil thru the engine.
