96 auto stuck in 1st gear

Hey

I have a good one this time. My friends 96 auto 2wd will only run in 1st and reverse. I have cheked the TPS and it is good. I have also checked the T.V cable and it is fine as well. The speedomter still works good and thier are no trouble lights on the dash of any kind. The truck just simply will not engage
2nd 3rd or OD. The gear selector moves smoothly through the gear range. I can't even get it engage a higher gear manually. The truck ran fine the day before, we hauled about 6 tons of hay with it. came home unhooked it and parked it in front of the house. cranked it up the next morning and it has been this way since. no warning so slipping just won't shift now. It runs great in first and reverse. I am thinking may be a hydrualic problem in the tranny? Let me know what you guys think. I beat this to death in the search but cannot find a replicable issue and a solution.

Thanks Ty

When mine did that, it was time for a new transmission. I hope there is some less drastic and expensive result in your case.

That is what I think too, but I thought I might as well ask. I have had serveral and never seen one do this.

Drop the pan , look for parts & or metal filings .
Then with a flash lite look up to see if the bands are inplace , there has been some regular stories about the 2 small parts that hold on one side & operate on the other side of the band breaking , and if they get out of adjustment enough , just falling out .

Try replacing the trans output speed sensor, the Gov circuit uses this to determine your moving thus, raises gov pressure.
