95 & 96 , any difference?

I am looking at 2 used trucks one is a 95 the other a 96, both automatics, 4 wheel drive regular cabs. Very close in price and miles. Is ther any big differences between these 2 years? Any "improvements" in 96 that make it a better choice? How much hp / torque are these stock?
Thanks

i know 1996 manuals has a 215 pump

autos probly had the 180 pump whereas 1995 autos had the 160 pump, so u might get 20 more horses so to say? Both BOMB quite well so its ur choice really id go with the 96 cause i already have one he he he he he and i like it..

Tx

95 has vacuum brakes and the 96 I think has the hydro boost brakes.

The '95 will have a 47RH (hydraulic) controlled transmission while the '96 will have a 47RE (electronic) controlled tranny. Th RE is more common but RH is supposed to have stronger shafts.

Yep thos are the major differences. 96 will have 180hp pump/47re, and 95 will have 160hp pump/47rh.

Is the RH really supposed to have stronger shafts?? Never heard that, but if they do, then all the better for me .

The RH tranny is prefered by racers and sled pullers

Bill the shift from 3 to 4 is a pain in the backside for me, to early around 45, I have tried adjusting the tps switch and have had no gains. That is the reason I dont care for a 95 automatic. I have not found a way to help that. I would like to have a shift at 50 or better yet 55 from 3 to 4 at part throttle. It is the last automatic I WILL EVER BUY. Any ideas? thanks Jim

Jim, are you talking about the shift into OD?
If so there is a PCM flash the dealer can do to set OD at whatever mph you like. I had mine flashed from 45 to 55 when it was new.
Problem might be now that these trucks are ten years old is finding a dealer mechanic who knows how to do it.

I tried to take Infidel's advice for the reflash a few months ago. As he said I couldn't find a dealer that has the right equipment (or Knowledge) to do it.

That is correct Bill, if I cant get that fixed then I thought why go any farward with the built up transmission as that is a bunch of BS pushing the overdrive button evertime to help out the early shifting problem or it seems that way to me. Bill thanks for your time Jim

'96 vacuum brakes - '97 hydroboost

other than RH/REtrans and P-pump HP rating the 95-96 models are identical (can't think of anything more than cosmetic)

Might want to check for exhaust manifold shrink starting to impact end bolts and maybe KDP fix in past. Also look to see if the pump bolts have been disturbed and make sure there is a check valve on the side of the vacuum pump (recall item). Also might want to see if the high-speed blower recall got done on it (can smoke wiring in column if not done).

Thanks for all the great info guys! I have a question on the KDP, while I know
what this means and understand it, can you tell just by looking if the KDP has been fixed? Is it visible from the outside?
Also on the wiring in column, can a dealer do a search in the VIN and tell if that recall was done? And if I am the 3rd owner and it hasn't been done will they do it for free? Both these trucks are at a small used car lot, not a Dodge dealer. Thanks

The timing cover needs to be removed to see if the the dowel pin has been taken care of. Don't take the previous owners word on it, many will say it has been taken care of out of irgorance because they don't know what you're talking about.

The dealer can tell you all the recalls done and the ones outstanding. Actually it's even easier than that, there is a Dodge website that you can enter the VIN into that will tell you.

160HP pumps are not as favorable to BOMB as the 180 pumps.
