95 47RH troubles..HELP.
My buddy has a 95 12 valve. Its a 2wd with the 47RH trans. He's having problems with it, I drove the truck and when its cold it will not move in a forward gear , unless you put it in neutral and let idle for 30 seconds, then drop into DRIVE and it moves and shifts great ....WEIRD part is when i jumped in it cold and fired it up the next day and put it in reverse, it moved great and then i put it in D immediately from reverse and it went down the road with no troubles, And i didnt wait 30 seconds or anything, I just acted like someone pulling out of a parking space by putting it in reverse moved 10 feet then put into DRIVE and It was off flawlessly. ???? Is there a valve sticking in the valve body or something. The truck has 87,000 original miles so it shouldnt be having big troubles but the truck is COMPLETLY stock so the trans isnt like grenaded because of too much P-PUMP power . Thanks for any help.

It sounds like the bands need adjusting. The OEM pan on the 47RH does not have enough fluid capacity to allow the servo's to fully extend when the bands are worn.
Sometimes a quick fix to get one to the tranny shop, if a person does not do their own band adjusting, is to overfill the transmission by two quarts and then drive to the shop. Do not drive it an extended time with the fluid over filled.

hi
you are experancing convertor drain back !
a common condition with the chry tranies , fluid drains from the convertor when sitting and if you place shifter in N for 30 sec the first thing after sitting overnight it will refill the convertor and you can drive normal , however i would recomend you NOT driving it by rapid accelerating befor the convertor has refiled as you may cause damage !
install a transgo tfod-diesel vb kit and it will fill the convertor in the park position , stock vb do not circulate fluid in park to fill the convertor !
as always check the fluid level in N on level ground and condition of the fluid , it may need new fluid and a filter .
check the bands but if they were very loose it would slip cold or warm .

drop the pan, adjust bands, then change fluids to synthetic
had the same problems with my tranny, until I did the above.
I unbolted the valve body, draining another 2-3 quarts. was trying to change out as much fluid as possible to newer synthetic.

It is converter drain back. Tired fluid will agravate it, but it is most common for it to be caused by the converter bushing wear. A very normal condition and has been for 40 years.
It really doesn't hurt much just put it in neutral right after starting it.
You can get a modified valvebody that will fill the converter in park.
(stock VB does not flow fluid in park.)
This condition has NOTHING to do with the bands. It is mostly normal wear on the bushing the converter fits onto. fresh fluid can reduce it.

It is converter drain back.
'94&'95 had a recall to fix the "problem" by adding a check valve to the cooler lines that prevents drain back.
A lot of people don't like the check ball, feel that it causes restriction in the cooling system and either remove the ball or don't have the recall done.

could be either drain back or band adjustment. i have a 95 4x4 and i used to have to wait for a while till it moved(got the truck for dirt cheap cause the guy thought the trans was toast). i adjusted the bands since i wanted to change all the fluids and it cured my problem. if you need a trans filter then do it and adjust, then you will know if it doesn't work it is drainback.
