4x4 clunk

4x4 clunk
My 94 3500 bangs and/or clunks in 4x4. It does it in both 4 hi and 4 lo. And the noise is not in succession. It will clunk work fine for a bit then clunk again.
I have checked the CAD, and everything looks fine. Plus the 4x4 lit does not turn off or flicker during the clunking.
I have also replaced the front driveshaft u-joints. The CV joints were very dry and loose.
Any suggestions???

Might check your axle joints. that might cause a clunk, what my cllunk is is the control arms are not tight. might check that too. If your front u-joints were bad then the axle joints probably need some attention too.

I am assumimng you are refering to the U joints inside the axle spindles correct. If they have any play in them I would sugest repllaceing imediatly. They spin all the time weather the 4 wheel drive is engaged or not so they tend to wear out if not lubricated. When mine went bad you could hear a clicking noise when going around slow shap corners with the window down even in 2 wheel drive. Hope this helps.

You might also want to check the "velocity joint" on the front drive shaft. It is a ball and socket type thing between the two universals on the front drive shaft up by the transfer case. This is something that a drive shaft shop will have to rebuild, or spend $500 + from Dodge on a whole new driveshaft. I had mine rebuilt for about $120 at Bick & Hines out of Utica NY. Even tho my universals looked good, the joint was dry, and the drive shaft had play at the pivot point.

If your truck is lifted, it might be too much of an angle, and causing interference, but X2 with the above about the velocity joint. If that is what it is, get it fixed before you break the yoke part, that is when things get expensive...and hard to find if you want it used.

mine did the same thing theres a big chain in the transfer case that was stretched out probably from accidently leaving it in 4x4 on the road. but when its stretched out it slips over the gears and causes the noise

All the u-joints and the velocity joint are brand new.
The axle u-joints look to be in good condition, and the noise is clunk or bang and not a click.
The arms are good, the front end was just aligned.
The truck is not lifted.
All the tires are the same size, in fact the 2 fronts are new.
I hate to say but I think Ryan Hyatt post of transfer case issues maybe correct. The clunk is almost sure to happen when you gas the truck. Anybody wanna buy a truck???
