47rh trannsmission question

This is my first post to this site, I have enjoyed reading the posts.

just bought 95 with cummins, 150,000 miles. Previous owner probably ran it hard as he had to replace rear end. Transmission shifts hard from 2 to 3. Transmission shop said probably worn clutches, only fix is rebuild,
Questions:
1. can anything else cause this problem. Could the rear band adjustment help? could tps replacement help?
2. If it is a matter of just a worn transmission and someday I planned to just put in a rebuild, any danger in just running it until it totally fails.

thank you,
Jim

Being a RH the TPS should not have much to do with it , adjustments are part of normal maintainance , when a use truck / car comes into my hands with no info on it , I like to do all maintainance , so I know when its do next , so I would check the adjustment , do not just do it but try to see where the adjustment was at when you got to it , check pressures & see if the fluid is pink .

The rear band is for reverse and manual low, so it won't have any affect on your 2-3 shift. Like John said, the tps on a RH will have no affect on shifting, its controlled hydraulically in the trans.

The front band is the one that you should check the adjustment on, it is applied in 2nd gear and released and the front clutch applied in 3rd. The proper adjustment is critical to shift timing.

I recently had a 47RH with a worn out front clutch, had 3 friction discs in it where 4 of the 6 friction surfaces where gone and I never had a hard 2-3 shift, long slid shifts occasionally, in fact I didn't have a problem unless I wanted to back up.

to jd730, I came across this explanation of the rear and front band :

"The front band controls the 2nd gear cluster. The rear band controls the 3rd gear cluster and reverse. For a 2-3 shift, the transmission shifts back to 1st gear with the front band while the rear band engages 3rd gear. If the front band does not release the 2nd gear clutches before the third gear clutches engage, the transmission binds, which shortens the life of the transmission clutches. If the front band releases too early in the shift, the engine will overspeed (sounds and feels like a slip) during the 2-3 shift." quoted from
http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/transmi...T_band_adj.htm

This would seam to mean that the rear band plays a role in the 3rd gear but I may be wrong since I am only beginning to understand all this....

This link give a pretty good explanation on how a 727 works and what hydraulic circuits are active in what gears, its for a 727, but it still applies for the first 3 gears on a 47RH. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmis...-tom-hand.html

flectro,
For what ever reason, the explanation on that site is very wrong, the rear band is for low and reverse. The front band is for 2nd gear and it is only applied when the trans is in 2nd gear. The way that site explains it would destroy the trans on the first shift through the gears, could you imagine dropping back into first at WOT in 2nd.
