4.10 Gear Mileage

What are you guys getting? My friend has a 96 2500 4x4 5 sp with 4.10 gears. He gets 18 MPG on the highway.

I have a 97 2500 4x4 5 sp with 3.55 gears. I get at least 22 usually 23 on the highway. He has blamed the gearing for his lower mileage.

Let me know what you get with 4.10 gears.

Thanks,

Bob

If he drove slower and kept his RPM's at the same as yours, he'd see similar numbers to yours. Pushing these motors over 2k on the highway drops the mileage considerably.

It sounds right. I swapped my 4.10s out for 3.54 gears. mileage went up dramatically. 18 before 21 now. both of those calculated at 65 mph average speed. Like Astro said rpms is the biggest factor. even more so since 12 valves dont have dynamic timing....yet. haha.

HI

My 1997 dually 4x4 extended cab 5 speed no muffler gets a miserable 15.5 or so MPG at 62 mph....It has real good pulling power tho!....I really think the 4.10 really kills mileage

My previous truck was a 95 with 3:55's and it got 23 on the highway. I have a 96 with 4:10's and it gets 19 on the highway. Driving by RPM's didn't mater. Gets the same at 65 or 55 MPH.

When we drive together we both go 60 MPG. He says he doesn't push the engine over 2000 RPM.

He's probably right at 2000 or just below. there may be some other factors contributing to his low mileage. but I'd say most of his issue is the 4.10s.

His truck is just about bone stock. He bought it new in 1995. My truck has been modified by the PO and myself but I still get better mileage.

Yes, he is at 2000 RPm @ 60 MPH. I am at about 1800 RPM going by memory.

I have had several different year models(98.5, 01, 03HO, 04.5) all with 3.54's, 4x4, std. trans., and QCLB. All of those trucks stock got over 21 mpg on the highway at 65. My newest truck absolutely infuriates me with it's 16-17 mpg. It's an 07 QCSB, 4x4, 6 spd., 5.9, with 4.10's. It was my fault for not checking that detail when purchasing the vehicle. It will pull like a Mack Truck, but I don't even think with mod's I would be able to hit 20mpg. I wonder what it would cost to swap the gears out front and rear, and if that change would pay for itself in a reasonable amount of time in Fuel Savings???

I am a very conservative driver.I get 14-16 in town and 18-21 on the highway.Steady highway at 65, I get 20mpg, at 60, I get 21.My 265's are almost 2" taller than the 245's that came on the truck. At 2000 rpm I'm at 65mph.Over 2000 rpm and my mileage drops fast.

I never get better than 20 MPG out of the 12v. New motor vs old motor, 175 vs 215 pump, NV4500 vs G56, Different turbos etc. Just over 16 in town with daily floggings and 19.7-19.9 MPG on the interstate. My fathers 24v constantly gets better MPG and his has 4.10s and an extended cab.
