2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
Before everyone says sell it and get a 2wd. I want to know how hard it would be to replace the transmission and transfer case with a 2wd unit? My transfer case crapped today and I never use 4wd, so I figured it might be a cheaper fix and would eliminate the possibility of the same thing happining again. Thanks in advance...
Re:2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
I run a delivery service and the thought of repairing another transfer case makes me cringe. 99% of my driving is on paved streets, the other 1% are om graded roads. I've used the 4wd 4 times in the 6 months and three times were to get motorhomes with trailers unstuck.

ROB something here is not right, I am assuming by being on the 1st Gen forum your truck is 93 and older. This would mean you have a NP205 T-case which is gear driven and one of the most wanted parts in the continent. What reasons are they failing, you realize the value of the truck will decrease by 40-50% by making it a freak. PK
Re:2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
Sorry, it's a 97. I thought a 12 valve engine was 94-98?? I know the 1st gen engine had 12 valves but they were concidered a 1st gen??
I don't want to get rid of the 4wd parts but I don't need them right now and at $1200 for a reman t-case I was thinking a 2wd tranny swap might be more cost effective in the long run, no t-case to go bad again. I was hoping all I would need is the trans and a driveline, but I'm don't know.

ROB

So far seems like no one has given you an answer, just a ration of grief. I don't have the answer for you but I know a guy that does. He is on this FORUM and his handle is TBGH.

I'll email him tonight and ask him to contact you.

Gary

Wasn't trying to give anybody grief just could not see the economy in removing one of the most reliable trouble free components of the truck. Start swapping things around and the possibilty to create more un-needed headaches will arise. If you want what it takes- Driveline-lengthened,output yoke maybe different, crossmember moved/replaced, and rear angle of diff may have to be changed to prevent vibration. #1 verify that you have a NP205 transfer case- #2 $1200 US is criminal for a rebuild exchange #3 rebuild it on kitchen table for $300 bucks unless you trashed the gears. These things were used in Dodge Chev Ford, if the case is okay rob the guts out of a used one $150-300. The hardest part of working on a 205 is getting all the needle bearings in place as they are not caged. PK
Re:2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
The model # on the tag is 241 DLD. If there are that many things that might need to be canged I think I'll have the t-case fix or replaced with a used one. I though $1200 was high. Thank you very much.
Re:2wd 5spd into a 4wd that has a 5spd????
ROB starting to make more sense now the 94 and newer truck uses the 241 but were updated to 241HD for the higher HP/TQ 98 and newer. Call Advance Adapters in California they will know exactly what updates/when and what and have an exchange/update program- refill T-case with Synthetic ATF for extended high heat and milage service. You and a buddy can put this in 1 afternoon easy. IF your really hard on T-cases get an Atlas but should not be necessary. Sorry I missed the 97 in your last post. These T-cases are chain driven and need a little more TLC than a 205. PK

Thanks for the info. I'll order one tomorrow. I didn't think it was difficult to replace but I wasn't 100%. I should be able to fix no problem.
