12v no start

1995 12v wont start ran all day and fired right up the only thing i would notice is it would start to die at lights and when i slowed down unless i pumped the throttle (fuel filter) this is my guess unsure. any how went out this morning and it just cranked and cranked and cranked. didnt have it plugged in last night its plugged in now and im gunna let it sit for a couple of hours and see what happens and than change my filter if that dosnt work

First thing i would look at is the fuel cut-off solenoid to make sure it is working if it is then change the fuel filter and try again.

My 96 when parked nose up would not start because of a leaky fuel return line coming off the back of the injection pump allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank. As long as I parked nose down it started just fine.

Pump the push button on the lift pump by hand till it gets hard and it should start up if you have a leak. Use good Marine Grade Diesel Fuel line for replacement and you may as well check the rubber hoses on top of the Tank as well

If pushing the primer bulb does not solve the issue, then at the back of the pump, off the side is the solenoid. Make sure it is easily pushed up, and snaps down on its own. There is a rubber boot over the plunger which rots off, and debris gets up in there and it starts getting sticky. Some also start to rust on the swivel down at the pump arm. Foster truck sells replacement boots cheap, and it is easy to pull the solenoid, clean it up, lube it and put the new boot on.

If you try the primer bulb, you should listen for a hiss at the Injection pump, this sounds like forcing air through your front teeth, and means the pump is primed and fuel is pushing past the overflow valve ( normal operation ) When I get a leak, it usually takes 4 or 5 pushes to hear the overflow valve.

I am pretty sure fuel should not come out on your hand when pushing the primer.

It's not the end of the world if some comes out when manually priming, a O-ring is leaking, but it is not the same circuit it uses when it runs so no harm.

Mine does the same thing, it is one reason I use a shovel handle to reach the primer.....

cwebb, are you saying you have white and black smoke coming out the tailpipe on the times it will not start?

okay guys need some input here asap. Truck has been on trickle charge all day still no start. im at a loss here primer bulb is priming can hear it prime like stated above. No start. Smelling diesel as it is starting means its getting fuel right? should i crack the injectors to check for fuel? Bad fuel? also if i change fuel filter do i have to reprime the system

First of all you may have a fuel problem. But could also be the fuel shutoff solenoid.

Have someone try to start the truck while you lean over the driver side fender watching the lower rear of the injection pump. You should see the fuel shutoff solenoid pull up as soon as they engage the starter. It'll be just above the throttle linkage and be connected with a small lever to the back of the injection pump.

It it doesn't go up on that initial starter engagement, then with the key on pull the plunger on the bottom of the solenoid up with your hand. It should then crank and run untill the key is turned off.

It this works then search fuel shutoff solenoid. Lots of reading.

Good luck, RR

Also, where are you. Cold could well be a factor as in fuel jelling.

If the shut-off solenoid is pulled up, I have one sure fire trick, and I do this ,,,,,,"ONLY",,,,,, after taking a 10mm wrench and disconnecting the two electrical leads on the intake manifold (top of engine on drivers side of valve covers).

Pull the intake hose off the turbo, with someone cranking, spray a small shot of starting fluid into the turbo. Really use a small amount. Once it cranks, if it will not continue to run do the start routine again, then hit it with small short bursts of spray until all the air is purged and it's running normal.

FAILURE TO USE STARTING FLUID IN AN APPROPRIATELY CONSERTIVE MANNER WILL CAUSE SEVER DAMAGE TO YOUR ENGINE.

The two leads you disconnected are for the intake heaters. They can cause the either to ignite in the manifold causing an explosion.

Good luck

RR
