1 3/8 input shaft

Any one ever change their input shaft to 1 3/8 on the NV4500? If so does the tappered bearing press on.

Southbend sells theirs pre-assembled, so you don't have to mess with seals or bearings. Valair doesn't do that. You can heat up the bearing in the oven, then drive it onto the shaft if no press is available.

What about the pocket bearing on the gear end. The reason I ask I am going to pull my Trans shortly and check the Pilot bearing notchie gears. If the input shaft is bad then I will have to change the shaft.

When you say notchy, are you having trouble getting one or two gears, like third and maybe fourth?

When you have the trans out, check for wear on/in the top cover. I am assuming you have a round boss the shift stub go's into here. There is a shoulder that the shift stub rides on, and mine was gone, allowing the shifter to drop too far into the trans and cause havoc. I didn't find it until after the 2nd rebuild. It was causing very notchy, ugly shifting for me.

Good luck. The South Bend customer service was top notch for me, by the way.

2 to 3 to 4th when I shift its not smooth. No speed or fast shifting or I will feel a little drag between gears. This started in Dec. I was 800 miles from home and noticed it going but made it find and still using it but shift slow. I have checked the slave cylinder and it seems to be ok. I been reading about the pilot bearing 100K is a good life for them. The lube has been changed about every 30K or so since new. The truck has 115K miles Mostly towing my RV. but babied.
