'02 Won't Idle
Last week the injection pump was replaced along with the throttle position sensor and cam position sensor on my '02 Ram 2500 with an auto. The engine runs fine until you go down to an idle and then it dies every time. The lift pump is producing the same pressures at the inlet to the IP as it did before the IP was replaced, i.e. 13 psi at idle. Clear fuel lines from the tank to the IP were used to verify there was no air in the fuel lines. The throttle position sensor calibration was checked and found good.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the engine to die at idle??

Sounds like you have covered all potential symptoms. Sounds to me like you may have a defective VP44....
Where did you get it?
Is it throwing any codes?

The pump was purchased from the Oregon Diesel Performance Shop I think and yes, the APPS was calibrated. No codes are showing up even when it dies at idle. We don't think the new IP is bad because it performs great at all rpms except idle!

Who installed the VP? Possibly the key was smashed during install and the timing is off. Usually if thats the case then it noticed by a miss at idle but if yours isnt idling then.....

Then because you cant get it to idle then the only way to tell if a smashed key is the problem is to remove the timing gear nut and look down the shaft with a mirror or maybe even remove the VP to see what the key looks like. If its smashed at all then thats most likely the problem.

and most of them get their pumps from oregon fuel injection.
who did the install? I would assume that this is a new current problem. So if a shop had installed this they would be having this problem before giving the truck to you. Did you install this? there is no shop in oregon called diesel performance shop. there are a few shops and I know all of them and I would say 90% of them are stand up great guys and know that if they installed and had a issue they would not be giving this to a customer. or if a issue came up and after install they would be helping out the customer if this came up.

Also, something people don't know or pay attention to is each pump is calibrated with a specific key, and you HAVE to have the correct key in, and in the correct orientation for the pump to be timed correctly.
The VP44 is the only one I know this is the case.

The IP was purchased from Oregon Fuel Injection and turned out to not be the problem along with the mechanic that installed it. We're sure the old LP caused the old IP to crash and burn even tho it was putting out 10 to 13 psi. The problem was that even tho the TPS was calibrated correctly, the throttle pedal had to be slowly depressed and let out about 20 - 30 or more times to teach the ECM the throttle curve. After that was done the engine never died at idle again!
The new FASS caused a hard hot start which was caused by the higher LP pressures (up to 19 psi) as verified by disconnecting the new LP and starting the engine normally. I'll put a delay relay in ASAP to solve that problem!
Thanks for all the help everyone!

just a FYI.
Oregon Fuel Injection does not sell a 100% new part/ Reman VP.
my current VP has almost 100k on it from them. However the last time I talked to them by email they explained that everything is replaced new except the computer board. They stated that those are replaced based on the date of how old they are. not on how many heat cycles they may have had.
like i said tho I have almost 100k miles on my current pump from them.
