misfire, accelerate problems, dies on idle, won't start now

sorta sucks for my first post but i could really use some help! please and thanks...

its a 2001 24 valve and its an auto... only mod is a K&N filter. (lame i know but i just got it)

i came driving back home today and i stopped for lunch with some friends and left the truck idiling cause it was so cold out. (high idle. -30) had lunch, came out truck wasn't running but lights and stuff were all on... it took a couple turns but it started and seemed to be fine.... so i just sorta shrugged it off and carried on my way.. drove fine down the highway..
about 2 hours later i stopped for a **** break and i got out and the truck started sputtering and jumping then stalled on me..
i got it running after about 5-10 mins and a lot of turning it over..... it was misfiring and acting all weird but i was 2 hours from any type of civilization so i reved it up then as the rpms were coming down i slipped her into gear... i got it going but it was still misfiring and sputtering..
after about 30 mins of this it seemed to start to calm down a bit... would still misfire on heavier acceleration.

i got it home and left it idleing while we unloaded the truck.. everything seemed fine.. i noticed the needle was moving a lil bit but not much really.. maybe a 100 rpm tops. drove my friend home.. let it idle there.. drove it back home and then turned it off.. drained the water seperator and stuff then went to start it up and it started fine then stalled out almost right away.. now it WON'T START.. i have it plugged in but its like -30 here.

i did an oil change a week before and drained the water seperator then too....

any help is appreciated... the nearest dodge dealership is 4 hours away.

aka Smoke Show (but someone already has it on here)

edit: it has 222,000 km's on it now

Are you using winter fuel?
It could be gelling on you.

Just a thought?
When you drained the water seperator did you bump the starter a couple of times to cycle the LP so it would fill the canister again? If not you may have pumped some air to the injectors. Try cycling the LP a few times and see if that helps? As far as your poor running prior, its a tough call, you will need to get a gauge on the fuel pressure to the VP44 first and make sure thats ok and if it isnt than you will have to change your lift pump. Good luck and keep us informed

See if there are any codes thrown. Turn the key on and off 3 times. On the third ON, leave it on and it will display the codes in the odometer area. If there are any codes, right them down and get back to us. If there is a P0216 code, you need a new injection pump.

Vehicle Speed Sensor (rear wheel ABS brake) is p0500. The p1693 is a generic code the computer throws when it sees a problem somewhere...

Sometimes you can disconnect the batteries, turn the key to run position for 15-20 mins. to drain the juice off the computer and clear those two codes. Your truck automatic of manual?

A bad lift pump, plugged fuel filter, starving the injector pump for fuel is a bad thing since the vp44 is fuel lubricated and cooled.

You have a fuel pressure gauge?

I would still use fuel conditioner. I do all year and especially in the winter just to make sure I get rid of any moisture and prevent any gelling in the lines to the fuel pump. On the big rigs they have fuel tank heaters and can run at colder temps. We don't have that luxury. For the minor cost of it, throw in a dose of good fuel conditioner (Howes, Stanadyne, Lubetech) and then do as instructed to make sure the unit primes.

I would also take a fuel pressure reading at the fuel canister if you have the equipment to make sure the lift pump is actually pumping. The LP motor can run without any fuel being moved.

On another thread someone was having some of the same symptoms as you and put some of the powerservice 911 in their tank and in the fuel filter canister. It solved their problems and is a cheap way to start here.
Good luck

Yeah that was ME and those WERE my symptoms.......I had howes in mine when it froze up on me.....I ussed diesel 911 made by powerservice (comes in a red jug) and it fixxed itself.....

IT did make for a cold crappy morning though.......after i had to call my boss to come get me in his powerjoke diesel...

Good luck man, just fill the filter and put the rest in the tank.... wait bout 10 minutes and crank her up.

Hope it works, zack

It seems funny it would die after it was running for a while, once warmed up it would continue to run, being a 24 valve i would look at the lift pump closely, just my 02.
