Getrag 360 banging when leaving off throttle
Hello all. Little catch up.
On January 30th I was running my truck through the gears pretty good.
I shifted to fourth from a matted third all was well until I left up on the pedal. Bang. Hmm i thought I was just being paranoid. Sounded as if you took a hammer and gave the drive shaft a quick wap.
Noticed every time I would suddenly take the load off the truck it would make this noise. In every gear r-1-2-3-4-5.
I got disgusted because it seems right before this I just put a double disk ceramic south bend in. Changed all fluids blah blah. And it was 5 degrees out for a week so I decided to purchase an 07 5.9 mint condition. Haven't had a problem with it yet just miss the old truck.
So tonight I put insurance back on it and renewed the registration. Just took it for it's first spin since parked. Never realized how bouncy this thing was
Now I sit here in it waiting for the turbo to cool I figure I could pick the forums brain. I ran it good from third to fifth tonight about 15 miles. Same noise. Can only explain it as a hammer smacking my driveshaft. Can feel it in the shifter. Seems maybe as if I pulled my hand from the shifter that it would pop out.
When I jack it up and put it in first gear to me it seems as I can do 3/4 of a turn of the driveshaft before it stops.
Any tips or help before I pull parts would be appreciated.
Thanks again everyone.

Some stats on your truck would be helpful, please fill out your signature.
I'm thinking maybe you lost a tooth or two on your rear diff ring gear, or pinion? Pop off the diff cover and check that first.
If nothing is found there, then I would pull both PTO side covers off the tranny and look for metal in the bottom of the case, or anything that looks out of place.

Not sure why it didn't post my signature but here it is.
Rear end looked fine last night when I pulled the cover. That was my first thought

I remembered you had a pretty hot sounding combo under the hood.
Like Trashing said, popping the PTO covers off and looking for metal at the bottom of the case, next seems like a good plan.
At least the 5W-30 is not super expensive, like the NV-4500 fluid is.

You can also use a healthy screwdriver to prod and poke checking for excessive slack through the PTO ports.

Tomorrow's project is to pull the pto covers and check with a handy screw driver.
I would suspect u joints if I hadn't just replaced them 2000 miles before hand with greasable moog brand. Not saying it's not possible to get a defective new part or have a new part go bad prematurely. As simple as it is to pull the shaft and check I will do that.

Good news is...it's not the tranny. Bad news is the np205 has a little much play in it. Probably will drop it tomorrow night and off the the shop it goes. Unless someone knows of an np205 rebuild or service manual floating around online? I have an extra np205 from when I did my auto swap with just 140k miles on it. Possible to buy a new bearing and seal kit and use any parts I need from it?

That is great to hear the trans is good.
The NP-205 from that auto is not a direct swap with the manual as it is 23 splines [auto] to 29 splines [manual]
You might be able to use it for parts though.

The NP205 s not a tough unit to rebuild. Hardest part I found was getting teh end play set of the counter shaft. Once that was done the rest falls into place.
Here is a couple links I used to help me rebuild my TC.
NP 205 Rebuild and Info - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network
Building a Bulletproof NP205 Transfer Case - 4-Wheel and Off-Road Magazine
There was another really good one, but the site is gone now.
Also check Youtube...couple good "How to" vids on there as well.

np 205 rebuild
I doubt you ll find much wrong with it, just rebuilt mine with 300 k on it. only thing wrong was the thrust washer was worn. the cluster gear in the middle is the hardest part, but not bad . the rest is easy. I changed bearings but it didn't need them. the hardest part is cleaning it all up for and painting. most likely a spline coupler problem. I think I posted a you tube vid on it.
