Brake dust shields and spacers

Anyone ever leave the dust shield and spacer out when putting the bearings and rotor assembly back together? Just put mine back together and the spacer and shield were rotted, one side only had the sheild so I left everything out. Was wondering if that could cause any problems later.

My dust shields have been gone for several years, haven't noticed any accelerated wear or anything. I would guess they help if your on a lot of dirt roads.
