Vaccum pump q's

Ok, what all does the Vaccum pump do. I know on my old 6.5 chevy "diesel" the only thing it controlled was the wastegate and when the pump finally died I just threw it out, got a shorter belt, and put a manual wastegate arm on it, (which included $5 of parts, wingnut, metal for bracket, and spring...) I'm pretty sure I need to reuse the Chevy PS pump for the hydroboost to work right so I was thinking about taking the CTD PS and Vaccum pump off and mounting the Chevy PS pump off of there instead. So, lets hear it. Any questions, answers, suggestions, jokes, winning lottery numbers etc... I'd like to know it all...Thanks in advance

Cheers!

Well, it does your heating and a/c mixing doors and controls. It also controls the cruise control. Also has something to do with the trans. (I think). And it controls the 4x4 axle disconnect.

As far as the engine goes the vacuum pump does nothing.
On the Dodge part though it activates the cruise control, 4wd and climate controls.

so since I'm not using cruise, 4wd is a little different on the Chevy and climate controls would probably be different as well on the chevy, the only thing I am keeping is the heater and coolant is always flowing through for that anyway isnt it? Its just a matter if you turn the blower on or not.

The Chevy will most likely have a similar setup where there are flow controlling doors in the heater/AC unit. Though I'm not very familiar with the hydra-boost setup, I think it still has a vacuum assist on it too? Some Dodges had the hydra-boost. I think you'll find the Dodge PS pump will work for you and you don't have to remove anything from the engine.

The vacuum pump provides vacuum for the hvac system as well as the cad cut out, cruise control, the brake booster and on some early models the abs system. The hvac system uses vacuum to control the mode doors not the temp. so if you take away the vac. it will only blow thru the defrost vents. The vac. pump also drives the PS pump so if you decide to change to the chevy system you will need to find a block off plate for the vac. pump mount as well as figure out a way to mount the differant style pump and find a way to run a belt to it to drive the thing.

well, I was thinking if I was going to take the Vac pump and Dodge PS pump off of the engine I was just going get the machinist at work to make a block and drive shaft for the Chevy PS pump and run the Chevy PS pump off the gear drive for the Vac pump...no new belt necessary.. All I want to run for the HVAC system is the defrost for the windshield anyway... my AC is the windows down...

Does anyone have a good idea of how the Chevy hyrdo-boost system works, theres 3 lines on the Chevy PS pump and all are going to/coming from the hydro-boost system. Also if it did have vacuum assist it wasnt doing anything in the Chevy because I took the Vac pump right off the old engine, the only thing it controlled was the wastegate
